Matt Barnes could be the next Miami Heat acquisition
The final pieces of the Miami Heat roster are now falling into place with the official signing of Mike Miller, the expected return of Joel Anthony and Juwan Howard on the verge of joining the team as well.
Now comes word straight from the horse’s mouth that free agent Matt Barnes will decide very soon where he’ll play next:
2maro is the day. I will let my fans know where I’m going to sign. Its gonna SURPRISE you!!!! Keep it locked..
Ironically, the signing of former Heat forward Quentin Richardson by the Orlando Magic has paved the way for Barnes’ departure and perhaps yet another possible steal by Pat Riley to shore up even more depth.
Could the Miller signing today have anything to do with the timing of this announcement?
Multiple sources, including A. Sherrod Blakely of CSN, are reporting that the Heat are considered one of the favorites to land the crafty Barnes:
Just got off w 2 diff sources who each said the #Celtics unlikely to get Matt Barnes. Dallas, LAL and … u got it, Miami, the favs now.
However, the Orlando Sentinel has the story a bit different are they are reporting that the favorites to land Barnes are the Heat and the Boston Celtics.
It would seem that the Heat have enough forwards on their roster with Mario Chalmers currently the only point guard on the roster and Dwyane Wade the only pure shooting guard. Then again, there are still about six roster spots open and the ability to add a tough defender for the minimum would certainly be another coup for the Heat.
Lastly, and I’m not making this stuff up, the Orlando Sentinel is also reporting that none other than soon-to-be 39 year old Penny Hardaway would like to join the Miami Heat again after his last stint in 2007. Somehow I don’t think another Shaq-Penny reunion in Miami is in the cards.

Iverson is simply a bad player with a huge ego. Not a good fit for Miami. Hardaway or J-Will I would like to see as Miami’s point guard. They have a great experience.

mmm not sure about Shaq… never a fan of the big fella. I like Iverson but I don’t see him fitting with the Heat. I would love to see Barnes in the team. I like the idea of bringing Veterans but I don’t want all of the ol’ veteran to come to the team

i dont either luis but thats all we can afford at this point most of the young guys are gonna want to see some green before they sign the vets on the other hand understand that it is now or never so they’ll take whatever miami gives them for a chance to be part of something great the younger players dont understand that yet and are more concerned with money not that i can blame them honestly so thats why we have to get vets but the good vets not just space eating scrubs lol

I may be crazy but is there any chance the club could give Antoine Walker a chance if he gets in shape? He clearly needs the cash and is only 33 years old. He was a solid performer on the championship team. Talk about a guy who would be hungry to earn a spot and some cash.

please no! The heat need UNselfish contributors right now. Don’t remember Toine jackin’ up threes out of the blue?? We need interior defense, not offense..Wade, LeBron and Bosh got that covered. I think Barnes isn’t a bad fit as a hustle guy, but we also need a veteran PG that distributes the ball and can defend. Too bad D Fish didn’t go through.

The Barnescition
Matt Barnes is rumored to be interested in joining the Heat.
Standing at 6’7 , he’s become a defensive specialist with his gritty on your face hounding and his intensity on his opponent. He holds a decent 0.444% shooting percentage average and a not great but palpable .329% from the three point line. Last season he got 4.2 rebounds per game which is nice to see from a SF.
Pros:
-Hustle and Grit (similar to Haslem)
-Defensive Rebounding
-On Ball Defense
Cons:
-Decent but not great 3PFG %.
(In contrast last season, D. Wright=.344% Q. Rich=.397% J. Jones=.411%. All 3 of these guys had wide open shots thanks to D. Wade. Now with both him and Lebron, whoever is on the court needs to nail 3s)
- He’s been on 7 NBA teams by now. Worries me a TINY little.
- His middle name is Kelly
- His wife is on Basketall Wives
Okay the last two have nothing to do with his skills but but let me tell you his biggest con, which isn’t much of a con but the biggest reason he won’t wear a Heat uniform:
- At 30 years old, he opted out of $1.6M contract to chase a bigger and longer contract to make his last financial run. His 9 Year vet minimum would be $1.2M.
I don’t see Barnes taking a pay cut. All our guys have made their money in their careers already and a paycut is more feasible. Barnes has never made a ton of money and he needs to make the most possible to live the rest of his life with.
One more thing, when the shit hits the fan and we need to cover Kobe, Joe Johnson (might not need to in playoffs =P), Vince Carter, Ray Allen/P Pierce, we’ll have Lebron and Wade taking turns locking them down. Scary thought for the rest of the NBA.
I’m rooting for him to join the Heat. But in this instance, I think money will do all the talking.

Judging by your posts, I see facts aren’t terribly important in your world but for everyone else’s sake, I’d like to point something out.
If there was ever a LVP (Least Valuable Player) award for each playoff series, it unequivocally would have went to Vince Carter in that Boston-Orlando series. Barnes did what he was suppose to for that team. He was FAR from the problem and why they lost. They lost because Carter pretty much did everything he possibly could throughout the series to get the Magic “fishin’” with Kenny, Charles and Ernie as soon as possible. I would have sworn Vince already had vacation reservations planned for the summer after watching his performance in games 4 & 5.
I think it says a lot that 2 of the 3 games where he plays less than 30 minutes, and other guys like Barnes and J.J. get more minutes, the Magic win. Then in contrast, 4 of the 5 games where he plays more than 30 minutes and jacks up the ball at a completely inefficient rate, the Magic lose.
So Barnes was NOT the Magic’s problem. He was a solid contributor, did exactly what was asked and expected of him, and provided an edge for an otherwise passive team. My point: Good pick up for the Heat if they can get him on the minimum contract…and that Vince is not my favorite player.

@Saleem – you are correct! lakers are the worst back-to-back champions. first, they beat the very young team – Orlando Magic. second, they won over Boston Celtics because of free throws. that’s also the night when kobe made 6 of 24.
@heatfan – the heat will destroy the 3peat of lakers next year!

Laziie if that’s true, then how come they hold the Larry O’Brien trophy? They are the champions. Lebron could not give his team a championship despite many all-stars with him. He didn’t even win an Olympic gold WITH DWAYNE WADE until Kobe came into the picture. Lebron and Dwayne Wade couldn’t even beat the other international teams who were mostly without NBA players. They needed Kobe to get a gold medal and that’s a fact.
And Lakers fans don’t hate the Heat, they just think they’re delusional and hyped up just because an overrated player and an all-star loser are now with them. So there.

Enjoy your rings. Kobe had LOTS of help because they won when he had bad nights. He is a great player but I believe he will play his last final this year and LOSE to the Heat. The Thunder will be the next big team in the West. Kobe had a great career but he is done and right now I can tell that LA fans are quite nervous because I’ve never seen any postings from LA fans till these blockbuster deals went through. Wade & Lebron are arguably the two best in the nba and it will be way too much for any team to handle come playoff time. I’m sorry BUT YOU ARE FINISHED!!! Wade
Miller
Barnes

I would be surprised if he joines the Heat. I think Barnes wants to get a nice contract. If we didn’t have Miller then maybe but I don’t see how he gets enough minutes to showcase himself for a nice payday. Unless of course he has also decided a ring is more important. Couldn’t the Bulls use Barnes, I’m sure he’s looking at a contender that has more money to spend.
The Heat need to sure up their Center and PG positions a little better then they can add extra’s at the other positions. Barnes wuold be a extra.

It might be “Wade’s team” right now, and that point can’t really be argued. He’s been here and won a title. But that’s not related to how well he plays a certain position or his style of play. LeBron is the best passing non-PG in the league, and some would argue the best passer period. His court vision is apparent when you watch him play — there’s a reason he’s often compared to Magic. And beyond that, when Mo Williams went down last year, LeBron averaged 11+ assists a game in a distributor role as he filled in at point guard. I’ve watched almost all of the guy’s games over the last 5 years….trust me, putting LBJ in a ball-handler/distributor role is the best way to maximize the strengths of Wade and LeBron.
James Reply:
July 16th, 2010 at 11:53 pm
And that’s not to knock Wade’s passing or distributing ability. He’s just got different strengths as a player. Wade is better playing off the ball, and LeBron is at his best with the ball in his hands. In the end though, it’s a discussion of who’s throwing alley-oops to who. Good times all around.

Plus this team is all of their team. Stop feedin into these haters thats a reason if they dont win next year is worry about who team it is. Seeing how there are pretty much no starting caliber options left at point gaurd I think our only option for the point guard position is LeBron and Wade alternating at the point depending on what the match ups are that night. They have both proven to have excellent decision making skills, they can both play off the ball, and the both of them have the ball handling skills that are required, so the need for a point guard is not as dire as the one for a veteran rebounding/shot blocking center with good size to compete with Howard, Bynum, and Perkins

Kobe was not the reason we won it was Dwyane Wade who led the team in scoring throughout the tournament and tallied a game high 27 points in 27 minutes on 75% field goal shooting and added 4 steals, 2 assists and 2 rebounds in the game. For the tournament, he averaged a team high 16 points in 18 minutes on 67% field goal shooting, 4 rebounds, 2 assists and 2.3 steals (courtesy of Wikipedia).
