Matt Barnes, Raja Bell, Keyon Dooling will not take their talents to South Beach
Three players that were on the Heat’s radar are choosing other teams for bigger paychecks instead of the veteran minimum and the chance for a ring in Miami.
Raja Bell, the 33 year old former FIU star, is signing with the Utah Jazz, one of his former teams in a long NBA career. He signed a three year contract worth about $10 million which is far more than he could have signed here in Miami, though he had expressed a strong interest in playing for the Heat (even going so far as to say they were his first choice) earlier in the offseason before LeBron James and Chris Bosh were added to the roster. But with this contract in all likelihood his last one in his career the offers, including one from the Los Angeles Lakers, were out of the Heat’s price range.
Former Heat guard Keyon Dooling, who was born in Fort Lauderdale and played for Dillard, has joined the Milwaukee Bucks on a two year deal to be the backup to Brandon Jennings and is effectively replacing the departed Luke Ridnour. Though his name was thrown around as a possible addition for the Heat, it’s hard to tell how much interest there was from both sides. His new contract is said to be at around $2 million a year, which is slightly more than what he could have earned in Miami.
Finally, the curious case of Matt Barnes is still up in the air. First he broke the news on Twitter that he was playing for the Toronto Raptors:
Nxt season I will b playing for the Toronto Raptors. I wanted to thank the fans in orl you guys were amazing the way u guys excepted
However, his new team don’t have the cap space to sign him outright to what was originally reported to be a two year contract in the range of $10 million. What complicates matters is that his former team the Orlando Magic must sign-and-trade him to Toronto and they don’t have the money to sign him either.
ESPN.com sheds some light on the matter:
Sources told ESPN.com that the teams will resume discussions Tuesday, as planned all along, with the intent of landing Barnes with the Raptors via sign-and-trade.
Yet no such deal could be assured as of midnight, raising the possibility that Barnes would have to accept new terms to sign with the Raptors or that other teams that have been chasing Barnes will get another shot at him if the deal collapses.
Since Toronto recently spent the bulk of its $5.8 million mid-level exception to sign Linas Kleiza, it doesn’t have the available funds to sign Barnes outright to a deal that starts in the neighborhood of $4 million.
The Magic, though, are prevented by salary-cap rules from starting a sign-and-trade deal for Barnes at higher than $2 million, because Orlando doesn’t have Barnes’ full Bird rights after employing him for only one season. A sign-and-trade deal would also have to span at least three years, although only the first year is required to be guaranteed.
So although it remains to be seen whether Barnes will actually sign with the Raptors, it’s a fair assumption that if he doesn’t join them he will seek a similar deal with other teams that still have money to spend. Miami is not one of those teams and can only offer the minimum to any free agent now. Although it would have been nice to have added him, the current roster is lacking guards, not forwards or centers.

As Surya nicely said, we need guards now and i don’t think Barnes is ready to take minimum, not that i blame him. Guess he ain’t all that “last chance for the ring thing”. Hope we can get Arroyo back or J-Will.

I understand the question marks that surround Carlos Arroyo, but I think he can bring the veteran PG mentality that the Heat are seeking. Carlos Arroyo last year maintained a great assist to turnover ratio and when things got out control he was always able to control the tempo of the offense. I understand that he is not a 3 point specialist or a great defender, but D-Fish isn’t really that either and we were pursuing him hard. As for J-Will and Eddie House they can obviously hit 3 pointers consistently, but their shot selection can be suspect at times and their defense is probably at the same level as Arroyo’s. Maybe i am a little biased because I also went to FIU and I am half Puerto Rican, but I think Arroyo brings certain things to the team that the other PG’s left can’t. Oh and one more thing, he was on the team last year so he already understands Coach Spoelstra’s system so just give the guy a break.

You know what I find sad? How come these guys arent being criticised for leaving their teams for more money? These guys play basketball for the love of money and fame!!! Thats not what being a basket ball player is supposed to be about. LeBron, Bosh Haslem and Wade and others all took less money to win. That says alot about them because these are the players that do it for the love of the game. In the end it is about winning. A PLAYER IS NOT DEFINED BY HOW MUCH MONEY HE MAKES, ITS ALL ABOUT HOW MANY WINS YOU CAN GET. We play to win, money is the plus!!! It just sucks that the media doesn’t portray our guys like that.

they heat are going to win the championship..firstly lets talk about why, well they have the master mind coach of pat riley mentoring erik spoelstra then it must be noted that wade bosh and lebron are not superstar rookies… no they are superstar veterans and are mature enough to understand that playing as a team and sharing the spotlight is they only way they will succeed. if they wanted to be in the spotlight and wanted full salaries they would’ve stayed with their respective teams.. but the fact that they take paycuts and are willing to share the fame means that these grown men are ready to play as a team with one goal. secondly to the lebron haters. the guy spent 7 years in cleveland and accomplished nothing, yea he broke records but he never won a championship. what if he stayed in cleveland and never ever won, yall wud say hes another charles barkley or or reggie miller. and then yall wud say, yes he broke records and is probably the best in the game but when it comes down to it he never won the ultimate prize which is a championship. and yall wud be sayin, well why didnt he move to another team LIKE JORDAN DID..for yall that dont know, Jordan spent his first 7 years as a cavalier and MOVED TO ANOTHER TEAM. he was just lucky enough that his big 3 (rodman and pippen) came to him. WADE is the current day Jordan(the big 3 came to HIM in Miami). Cleveland fans should be ashamed of them selves and judging my the comments of Dan Gilbert it seems like LeBron made the RIGHT decision cause he would be playing for a hipocryte owner if he stayed in cleveland.. no one complained wen KG and Allen went to boston..NB Boston won the championship the very first year when they got their big 3.. rememeber the heats big 3 is way better and younger than bostons. so i would be worried if im not a heat fan.. but fortunately Miami is my home

@efstje and heat-haters
i’m a former celtics fan and a fan of the big3. the big3 you’re talking about is almost done. Paul Pierce was limited by artest in the finals, his average scoring dropped. Allen was very inconsistent, breaking a 3-pt record one night and going cold the next night. KG is not 100%. With that kind of performance, i don’t expect this big3 to face the lakers in 2011 and lose again. Some say it’s just a matter of 4points and it’s because perkins is not around in Game7. I think that’s not the point, if the big3 have played consistently from game1 to game6, they could have won.
Now, I decided to root for miami when the MIAMI THRICE joined forces because i know that these are consistent players. Who can guard and shut down Wade or Lebron? No one i think, not even artest.
So whether it’s for the reason of ego or winning, I don’t care. I will enjoy seeing them play together because, let me say this again and again….”They are the cream of the crop of their former teams”. Let’s see in May, IT WILL BE SHOWTIME IN MIAMI.

Um i agree and disagree. taking a pay cut doest not mean playing for free. they still have families. but i agree that virtually nobody talks about how much money they left on the table to play with each other for an opportunity to win. And just about EVERYONE (else except for everyone signing with the heat) in the NBA is going for the max contract. When did Magic, Shaq, Kobe, Jordan do that, and in their prime.

However what I was refering to was that the Heat were CLEARLY the free agency winners this year, thats what I was refering to, (I personally wouldnt declare them CHAMPIONS unless they have a succesfull season this year), and because it so happened that they all chose to play in Miami, now Miami is the most hated NBA city in the US. They coulda landed in Golden State and the world would hate them instead. People are mad they didnt get any of the big 3 free agents. MIAMI DOESN’T HAVE MUCH NBA HISTORY, 1 CHAMPIONSHIP THATS IT!!! Guy can secure the ball, plus if you watched Puerto Rico against USA, you know he can score in fast up tempo game, also he had great games in national games over the summer. I guess we are going to see up tempo in miami this year with all the stars we have in miami thrice. He can shoot if you gona tell him to. I see him as a perfect fit for coming of the bench. Eddie House is a good option tho, i prefer him over J-Will that’s for sure.

God you want this team to fail so bad. I encourage the contrarian, but the “ball-hogs” you refer to are the first, second and fourth most efficient players in the NBA according to John Hollinger. No other team in the NBA has more than one in the top 10. Mike Miller had one of the top-20 three-point shooting performances of all time last season by percentage. And he’s going to be more open than ever.
You might hate this team personally, but from a construction standpoint, they’re going to be very, very good.

They were “efficient” because they were given the ball 90% of the time. I truly doubt if they will be as efficient together. And I don’t hate the team per se, Miami was one of my favorites, but what they did was not good for the NBA nor for Miami because they conspired in believing they’ll give the Heat several championships. Such is the arrogance of Lebron. We’ve all witnessed it when he publicly humiliated Cleveland. I can’t wait to see them fail because of the injustice they did to the league and to the game of basketball. If you’re a superstar, at least prove to the world you have the abilities to lead a team to a title, and not conspire with other superstars to form a so-called formidable title-contender for the next 6 years. What would happen if these 3 will conspire with other superstars, top 10 players at that like Carmelo to join them and perhaps Tim Duncan next year? What would stop them from doing so even if legally they can? Is this good for the NBA and basketball?

Clueless shawn, it’s the conspiracy that matters. That’s what’s appalling about this whole deal. If you are a winning team like the Lakers, Bulls and the Celtics because you did so through genius and selecting cleverly in the draft, that fine as it was within the bounds of the rules. But to conspire and brag that you’re gonna win 6 titles simply coz you piggyback with other top 10 stars is a different story altogether. That’s arrogance and deceit.
Don’t be jealous of other winners just coz they have several titles due to their genius in selecting their players through the years. I know you’re a fan of a team with only 1 title to show in 22 years, but heck, even if you’re gonna win one with the 3 ball-hogs you’ll never get the same credit the lakers, bulls and celtics have coz you’re case is one of conspiracy and arrogance. It seems like ur upset about these guys “conspiring” and don’t think their union will “help” the NBA.
As far as conspiring tell me what former Laker great and HOF’r gave Gasol to the Lakers for a few picks and the biggest draft bust in NBA history??? Great draft I don’t think so. You take Pau off that team and Kobe is not there see his tirade to be traded a few summers ago.
Next what former Celtic and HOF’r gave KG to Boston for Jefferson (good player), and nothin else of value???
When major sports created free agency the truth of the matter is that there has ben conspiracies in every sport where players have left for more money, these guys did it for less and that commendable in my opinion.
As far as helping the “cash strapped” league, The goal of any business is to make money… and sellouts still = cash right??? What about ratings doesn’t that still = cash too? IF Miami makes it and plays the Lakers, if you think that won’t break all types of rating records ur crazy.
Just take out ur personal dislike for the situation and u’ll see how it helps the NBA and fits right in withthe rest of the roster move conspiracies. I wouldn’t put it pass the NBA about this being a bigger conspiracy than these three guys and the Heat org, but who am I to make that claim. Hahaha
ESPN reported Earl Watson (PG) from Indiana was receiving interest from the Heat, but to tell the truth, I don’t know much about him compared to Arroyo, House, or Williams. If anyone can give me some feedback it would be much appreciated. But whoever Riley decides on will be the right pick. Man is a genius!

@monmon
it’s your “boxed” thinking that championships can only be won when teams or owners hire intellectually. i resent it when the media sometimes post that “with the acquisition of this player”. they treat basketball players like a commodity when they are not. they have their own free will and decision, they are humans. especially when you belong to the “cream of the crop”, you can demand what you want. that is the same thing we follow even out of sports right? it’s what you called competitive advantage.
you think as if only the owners of a team have the right to form a winning combination and players are just robots who will follow. that’s not the way it is now.
and i agree with shawn, they were FREE AGENTS. if you don’t like that, then tell david stern to remove free agency in the league.

It’s ok to be selected through free agency. If you read what I said it’s the “conspiracy” issue that is diabolical. What good is free agency if they conspire? That means other teams would never have a chance to get them because they have already decided which teams they go in the first place. That in effect scuttles the free agency idea.
[Reply]
monmon Reply:

And Big 3, are you serious when you said that these players are not commodities? Look at the draft. Look at the free agency. Look at the trades. Aren’t these signs that players are commodities? C’mon, the NBA is big business and there are rules that one can or cannot do while you’re in the league. Do you believe there’s freedom of expression in the NBA? That’s one human right, yet can the players say what they want to say? Even the owners are fined if they say something from the heart the league doesn’t agree with. So quit convincing people that players aren’t commodities, coz even if it’s not right, that’s the way it is in this league.

Here’s my piece…
If you really think we won’t win titles, then why should you also have a problem that we are claiming it? And if you really believe you’ll stay winning in the next 30 years, why bother with our comments that we’re gonna win and we have a great team? hahahaha.

i said the players are treated like a commodity when they are not. doing the sign and trade doesn’t mean they are treated as commodity, the teams are just looking for the best fit to their team.
and you shouldn’t correlate the rules with freedom of expression. in all aspects of life, the rules are there to obtain order. freedom of expression also has responsibilities attached to it.
and again, you are correlating that there is no freedom of expression in NBA because a fine is imposed when someone expresses his anger. my goodness, i think you are old enough to understand why such rules should be there, there is no logic to your reasoning.

You know Lame 3, when you make sense then I’ll dignify your comments with a reply. Is this a blog for school dropouts? One dumbo is agreeing with the other dumbo. Non-sensical people understanding each other. These people aren’t delusional anymore, their just lunatics! What a sight to behold.
Monmon, are you the personality that claims to work at the morgue? Or was that alter-ego Marcus?

I honestly think you’re Marcus, James. Stop disguising yourself. You’re really a Bull fan, aren’t you? C’mon, admit it…

Just answer the question, crazy.

Maybe monmon/marcus/mike has an honest-to-god disorder. Maybe he just blacks out every 20 seconds and awakes as Marcus, Mike or Monmom, fills in the “Name” and “E-mail” box, feverishly types a new comment, then blacks out again. Just repeats the process over and over and over again at the Cook County morgue, and none of his superiors have the heart to fire him because he’s the lovable disorder guy who loves his Bulls/Lakers/whoever (depending on his personality at the moment).
Sounds like a winner of a sit-com.

Very eloquently said, James. You’d make a good scriptwriter. It’s like you wrote the Heat script. Ok dumbos, gotta go now, you’re boring me all of a sudden. Hoping to hear from you again soon, suckers!!! hahaha

Monmon is either penning a very lengthy and heated rebuttal, or I hit the nail on the head so hard that he’s snapped out of his multiple personality disorder and is vacantly looking around the room(morgue), wondering where the last 20 years of his life went.

Nice, keep representin’ man. I just got my Heat LeBron jersey in the mail the other day, but I don’t bust out the jersey unless there’s a big game. Have to build up the mojo. Superstition is the key to championships.

It didnt take intellect, jonathan. It was a conspiracy hatched for a long time among friends. I don’t know why they think they’re gonna win anything when they couldnt even beat Greece in the Worlds and also lost in the Olympics together before 08.
[Reply]
Apparently you were living in a cave because they did win the gold after that.

And wade was the leading scorer off the bench and by the way the whole U.S.A basketball program was revamped and since basketball is a team sport here goes a little leason. “You win as a team and lose a team” its a team game

Thats right D-Wade led the team to the gold not KOBE and he did it from the BENCH!!! James and Bosh were right behind him.

Yeah, jonathan, if they’re so great how come they couldn’t win without him?

If you are referring to the olympics where they lost in greece thats easy… INEXPERIENCE. They never played on that level together. However im not saying that Kobe wasn’t an important part of last years team, he played an excellent part, but he did not lead team USA to the gold, it was D-Wade, and the most interesting part was that he did it as a bench player.

Hey monmon, i have a question if ur still here.

Why don’t try to get Chris Paul? hehe , at least Jason Williams for point guard….
