Miami Heat officially re-sign Carlos Arroyo

The Miami Heat have released this official press release:

The Miami HEAT announced today that they have re-signed guard Carlos Arroyo. Per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“By re-signing Carlos, we feel we have accomplished another big step in adding to this team,” said HEAT President Pat Riley. “Carlos showed last season that he was one of the most competitive and efficient point guards in the NBA, and we are happy to have him back.”

Arroyo has appeared in 505 career games (148 starts) over eight seasons. During his career, with six NBA teams, he has averaged 6.9 points, 3.2 assists, 1.7 rebounds, and 18.7 minutes, while shooting 43.8 percent from the field and 80.5 percent from the foul line. He has scored in double-figures on 160 occasions, and has registered 60 multi-steal games.

During the 2009-10 season, Arroyo appeared in 72 games (35 starts) for the HEAT, averaging 6.1 points, 3.1 assists, 1.8 rebounds and 22.0 minutes, while shooting 47.5 percent from the field and 84.4 percent from the foul line. He set the HEAT single-season franchise record for assist-to-turnover ratio (4.17), which ranked second in the NBA last season, and registered a career-high in field goal percentage.

Arroyo originally signed with the HEAT as a free agent on October 12, 2009.

¡Te lo dije, que tu no sabes nada de baloncesto Surya Fernández!
Tu afirmabas categóricamente que Arroyo no tenía ninguna posibilidad de retornar con los Heat y yo te dije que Riley sabe más de baloncesto que tú: “Carlos showed last season that he was one of the most competitive and efficient point guards in the NBA…” Riley said. Chúpate esa en lo que te mondo la otra! jajajajajajaja!

Judging by your undying love for Arroyo I would re-sign him too strictly because of marketing purposes. I’m still waiting for you to critique him but I know you can’t bring yourself to doing it. You know so much about basketball because you like a player based on where he was born, right? Very “objective”.

Arriba, Puerto Rico. I’m sure Carlos will have better numbers this next season, specially in assists. He started 35 games and Heat had 24-11 record (.686) He had 6.1 pts per game shooting only, 6 times per game. My forecast for this next season 9.3 pts.
6.5 assist/game. Sorry Surya !!!!!!!!!

For the last time, I don’t have a vendetta against Arroyo. I’ve only said two things against Arroyo: 1) He had a bad playoff series against Boston, 2) There were better options out there at point guard in free agency. Obviously the Heat have made an effort of bringing back players from last year like Jones, Magloire and now Arroyo for team chemistry and continuity. That’s fine. Not that big of a deal. Arroyo fans need to stop being so sensitive and accept the reality that he isn’t the greatest point guard to ever walk this earth. He’s a decent backup at this point of his career, nothing more and nothing less.

I’m happy with Chalmers or Arroyo starting. I think they both bring strengths and weaknesses to the table. Here’s a tip to help…pass the ball to LeBroshAde, or whatever.

4 Alex Ortiz { 07.22.10 at 8:19 pm }

Surya, I have no problem with your view of Carlos Arroyo. His defense is no where near lock down and against quick guards like rondo and Westbrook he might be a liability. What I have a problem with is that you seem to think there are other options out there that would first of all take the veteran minimum salary, fit in the “Miami Heat culture”, and defend opposing point guards better than Arroyo could. Jason Williams and Eddie House are definitely better shooters when compared to Arroyo, but they do not take care of the ball and their shot selection can be suspect at times and if you think their defense is that much better than Arroyo’s then we are not watching the same games. In the end Pat Riley made the decision that Arroyo’s upside outweighed whatever flaws he may have, and I am happy to see him back, and I don’t think Arroyo was signed for marketing purposes either I mean come on LeBron James alone took care of that without even mentioning Wade and Bosh.

[Reply]

shaun Reply:

I completely agree with Alex, on his perspective on Arroyo. He’s not the fastest, quickest or lock down defender that I would want him to be, but he takes care of the ball and more often than not make the right decisions. he is a cerebral type of player and can be very useful for Miami. Good pick up. Go Heat.

Kobe’s mvp and a back to back champ. Miami won 1 title in 22 yrs. Celts whipped their asses last year without breakin a sweat. Not even 3 hogs and a group of waterboys will change that this year. I seriously doubt Miami can beat the Celts this year with JOneal and Nate being resigned along with Pierce and Allen. And with KG healty and Rondo running rings around your water boy-guards rotation, Celts will sweeps the 3 hogs. It’ll then be a rematch of last year and lakers will 3-peat. That’s a no-brainer, dreamers.

good idea. honestly, i’ve said in this site before that i’m a former celtics fan. i saw how pierce was limited by artest. saw how allen was inconsistent. kg is not 100%. and now that perkins got injured, i never see it coming for celtics anymore next year. i badly don’t want lakers to get their 3peat because kobe is so proud and the greatest ballhog of all. he didn’t get championships without any help. and i love celtics because i see teamwork in them.

that’s why when lebron announced he is joining the heat, i said, there’s hope! there’s a new younger team who can show what teamwork and show the world that basketball is team effort! i rejoiced while my close friends who are laker fans really got afraid. that’s the truth.

thank you for the welcome. i could feel how afraid the laker fans are. we already have great signs that we are in competition:

POSITIVE SIGNS:
- a troller who speaks nonsense.
- stan van gundy and doc rivers acknowledged that miami heat is a strong contender. stan van gundy even said that the heat is an automatic contender.
- AND A LOT MORE TO STATE HERE.

that’s why the trash that heat-haters say about the heat is just a defense mechanism – to remove themselves from being afraid. BECAUSE EVERYTHING THEY SAID IS HISTORY. nobody can predict the future. they cannot accept the challenge that miami heat will bring because it’s very strong.

Very good points also big3 with the lakers ron arest can’t gurad lbj and with kobe stickinh wade how healthy are kobes knees going to be remember he had his knee drained and how much will he have left in the 4th quater whens he’s been guarding wade for 3 quaters and plus the heat can switch off lebron and wade off kobe which will drive him crazy remeber lbj and wade were 1st team all nba for D two years running

[Reply]

Big3 of Southbeach Fan Reply:

yeah, artest can’t guard and limit lbj the way he did with pierce. kobe had a hard shooting night everytime he’s guarded by tony allen, what more when wade will guard him. this would really be what we can call – amazing.

Talking about lakers and all that just brings me to Kobe’s mad game winner….now just imagine having Bosh and LeBron that game….I don’t think it would come down to winning shots at all :)

Good to see Arroyo back, and don’t worry about the defense, i think he is willing to get some D going this year + if anyone blows by him, there is always big 3 to block that shot or layup or dunk!

[Reply]

15 oman { 07.23.10 at 3:56 am }

a lakers fan calls the bron bosh and wade ballhogs. think bron and wade without any allstars on their team averaged more assists per game last year then the entire starting five of the lakers. add bosh’s assist numbers and the three averaged more assists last year then the starting five of the celtics. if the big three are ball hogs and they pass more then your entire team what does that make your team? as far as beating the celtics goes the celts just don’t match up. rondo vs. wade adv. wade miller vs. allen adv. miller, bron vs. pierce your fing kidding right bosh vs. kg adv. bosh, j o’neal vs z. there is a reason riley didn’t bring back o’neal HE SUCKS. looking at actual inarguable stats no team can beat the heat in a series. yes i realize having miller start and wade at point seems strange but there is no team that matches up favorably in more than one position against a lineup of wade, miller, james, bosh, z.

[Reply]

shawn Reply:

made very good points but ill be lebron at point
like pippen was

[Reply]

oman Reply:

only reason to have wade at point is on D. point guards tend to be shorter and with lebrons length he could guard the two or the three (whichever player is better) easier than wade. on offense i would say point is handled by which ever one it is easiest to get the ball to on transition. though with wades slash and pass style and james being a better jumpshooter giving wade the ball first i think might result in more production with the D breaking down before james touches the ball.

[Reply]

monmon Reply:

OMG clueless shawn, are you talking about basketball or another sport? LBJ at point? Pippen was at point before? Are you talking about basketball, Einstein? I’m sure you entertained having slowZ at point too. Are you in kindergarten, dumbo?

[Reply]

UNCB278 Reply:

DUDE are you serious i will speak on the point of LBJ….You must not have seen any of his games last year if you say he cant play the point….8.2 APG 7.2RPG 29.8PPG with his frame and quickness that would be a matchup nightmare for anyone to guard….His versatility is unlike any NBA player he could play any position on the floor if he wanted to at 6-8 270lbs…. Give me a good reason as to why Lebron shouldnt play point…..Besides that would create matchup difficulties for your boy Kobe seeeing that if Ronda had any type of a jumpshot he would have single handedly torched the lakers….(ALTHOUGH HE WAS COOKIN UR LA LAKERS BY HIMSELF) ie I can’t stand the Celtics…Not one person on the Lakers could hold Rondo in check……Please dont give me that BS that Kobe was guarding him….Kobe sagged of of him the whole game cuz Rondo has the worst jump shot as a pg in the league took you and the Zen Master (3-4games) to figure that out…So if your gonna sit here and tell me that Kobe is gonna guard LeBron with his bummed knee, finger, back, or whatever he comes up as an excuse for 38min in a game a 7-game series ur sadly mistaken…..Don’t even mention your boy Artest because he had a tough time keepin up with Paul Pierces slow behind….

With the new acquisition of Matt Barnes that throws another option your way but remember there is Wade and LBJ…….Just admitt it is not going to be a cake walk and that you guys are very lucky that Perkins’ went down with an injury because had it not been for that injury you guys would have lost……

shawn Reply:

wow u really dont know nothing how sad
AND YES PIPPEN WAS A point foward

monmon Reply:

@ UNCB. So are you saying that you are going to make LBJ a point guard or forward? Oman was talking about Wade and Miller as “point guards.” You probably mean LBJ would be a good point “forward” judging by what you’re saying. Did you see what happened to him in Cleveland when he would play point? Did he win anything? Naah, he did nothing for the team except made himself MVP without showing anything for it but his stats. True, he had numerous assists but it’s coz he hogged the ball 90% of the time!

Dude, quit making excuses for the Celts loss. Did you hear the lakers make excuses when Bynum went down and played only 30% of his skills? If we base it on your excuses, what do you think would happen if Bynum was healthy? Lakers would have swept the Celts, dude. And LBJ and Wade can’t guard shit. Celts toyed with both Cleveland and Miami last year. With JO now with them it’s gonna be a cakewalk against Miami. Seriously the East finals is gonna be contested between Boston and Orlando this year as long as my man Vince plays the way he should.

And point forward is not an official position in basketball. The term was coined by the announcers during the great LA-Boston rivalry in the 80s, referring to Bird who was a great assist man when he had the ball. In the 90s it was named for Pippen. But both Bird and Pippen were officially known as “shooting forwards.” Go on, read history and basketball before you make comments you clearly know little or nothing about. The latest news is that CP3 might go to Orlando. This means goodbye to all the chances of Miami. First, Wade and LBJ can’t guard anybody, they’re only good at scoring when the defense is weak. Second, Bosh is the softest power forward in the NBA. Third, the Miami Cold only has 8 players to date and is recruiting in the WNBA to get it’s other 5 players. Fourth, it is doubtful that Wade and Bosh can even play healthy during the playoffs with the former’s brittle feet and the latter’s cracked face.

The lines are drawn — Celts vs Magic in East finals! Miami would be lucky to get past the Bucks or Hawks in the first round. But yall just gotta believe, right? hahaha

@monmon

you’re showing again that you don’t know basketball.
as a former celtic fan, how can your fakers complain in 2008? how can they make the injury of bynum as an excuse when you rest all your winnings on kobe’s shoulders? and it was 2008 when you have a huge advantage in game 4 (without bynum) but you lost. that’s why you can’t blame that to your injured bynum! your kobe had it all but he let it slipped away in game 4 on your court.

now going to 2010, celtics lost because they don’t have a legitimate center in game 7. do you want me to remind you of the stats again? you only won in the rebounding department, celtics got the better percentage in all the other aspects. that’s why the loss was attributed to the injury of perkins.
and you won by a marginal 4points.

you’re pathetic. just go believing that you can have your 3peat while working those phones at the morgue. ;-)

[Reply]

monmon Reply:

hahaha, Lame 3, still bitter about your “in your face” loss? Oh, sure, Perk was the superstar and when he was gone so went the Celts, right? What a pathetic and bitter git. So even when you had 4 all-stars (3 hall of famers), mike finley, nate robinson, Sheed and all those good support group Perk’s loss was the clincher?

You don’t know anything about basketball then, Lame 3. And we never blamed Bynum’s for the loss in 08. We took it like men and just got even. The Lakers weren’t even expected to be in the Finals then as only Pau was added to the team. But Kobe was MVP that year and he led the team to the Finals despite weak support. In that series Odom and Vujacic were nowhere to be found and the others couldn’t support Kobe. Hell man, this year it was just Kobe against 4 all-stars! And guess who won, bitter man? You had Rondo (all-star), KG (HOF), Allen (HOF), Pierce (HOF bum), Sheed (former All Star and champ), Nate (former All-Star) and Finley (former All-Star) and you still couldn’t beat Kobe? And it’s coz the bum Perkins got injured?

No wonder you’re jumping to the Miami bandwagon, bitter guy. You don’t know how to win! But you’re wrong switching sides, the Celts still trump Miami this year, which shall make you doubly bitter! Poor fella…

James Reply:

He’s referring to the lengthy response you wrote to me a while back, talking about how you understand the meaning of life or some such nonsense, because you work at the county morgue in Chicago (making it the Cook County morgue). You also claimed to be “an investigator,” which I quickly dismissed based your grammar tendencies and overall lack of ability to communicate via the written word. My conclusion, then, was that you answer the phones at the Cook County morgue, since it seems likely that no one as unintelligent as you would be given much more responsibility than that.
Also, I’m not sure how an investigator (whatever that title means) who works for the morgue in the 2nd most populous county in the country, with a notoriously high murder rate, would have the time to stroll into work, sit down, and just start blasting away on the keyboard with copious “LMAO’s” and other dullard-speak. You yourself proclaimed that you’d been busy “investigating” many murders (don’t the, um, police do that…?), yet had somehow been waxing poetic about the great Kobe Bryant (or Chicago Bulls, depending on whether you were currently using the moniker “Marcus” or “monmon”) for hours on end.
So anyway, that’s probably why he’s referring to you working the phones at the morgue. Idiot.

monmon Reply:

What a clown you are, James. I never wrote that. But of course you’re going with other issues coz ya can’t talk basketball. You get quiet on me all of a sudden when we discuss it. Yeah, man, the old shift the issue approach is all ya can do. Can’t blame you, though, ya got nothin to argue against the champs. All you and the others can do about it is make excuses. What a dummy.

James Reply:

Haven’t engaged you about basketball in a long time, and I won’t be — nothing you write makes any sense. Not in a “you’re a hater” type of way, but in a “you call LeBron James a ballhog despite all evidence being to the contrary” type of way. You’re an idiot, and you drag down any attempt to actually discuss basketball. It would be conducive to actual discussion if you were banned from these boards.

monmon Reply:

Yup, you’re just being consistent about your excuses. The old adage is right, when you don’t you anything about a subject, just be quiet and ride the others who does.

Clearly lame 3, your arguments are all illogical.

so you think lebron can’t play the 1. point forward, point guard, point center no matter what you want to call it the point brings the ball up and usually passes the ball. if you look at the top ten assist leaders of last year only two are not”point guards” and only two averaged more than 19 points a game. (wade/james) so according to stats they are easily top ten facilitators (playmakers). your argument about a 6’8″ 260 lb man not being able to play point ought to be taken up with this guy a lakers fan might be familiar with he goes by the name magic and he did it thirty years ago. magic was 6’9″ and 255. of course if you were a real laker fan not just a bandwagon jumper you would already know that. and yes if Z had over 8 assists a game(and the most on the team) i’d put him at point too. (but only on offense lol).

[Reply]

monmon Reply:

Lebron playing the 1? And who’s gonna play the 3, Arroyo or Chalmers? And so what if they made those assist numbers, does that make them point guards? And true, the Magic Man was 6’9, but he was a true point guard ever since he played for Michigan State. He once played point on offense and center on defense when they won the title in his rookie year but that doesn’t make him a Center. He was one of those players that could rise to the occasion and play different position but only on a need-to basis.

Playing Lebron at point is as ridiculous as saying Miami will win the title next season.

@MONOMON
1.) Your argument about Bosh being the softest power forward in the game….As I REMEMBER Mr. Bynum doesnt play all that strong himself….His own teammate called him out for pretty much playing like b ^&**^. You call Bosh- soft im pretty sure in team in the league would take a guy that avg..24ppg 11.4rpg 2.3apg….Soft or nOT…There is no denying the many is an animal……the passion and intensity he plays with can not be matched with chump Bynum on the bench complaining about his knee or some other injury every year……Im pretty sure if Bosh went to LA he would be starting over ur boy BYNUM without breakin a sweat

2. LBJ And Wade- Can’t guard really really…CHECK UR FACTS LeBron was ahead of Kobe in the points for 1st Team all defensive team 45-34….Not to mention WADE was 2nd team so for you to sit hear and say they can’t guard anyone THAT IS JUST IIIIGGGNNNOOORRANNTTTTT….Im pretty sure your aware of that..

3.) You mentioned JO I’m assuming you mean Jermaine Oneal…lol you highlighted him as to the reason why the Celtics are going to finals and are going to beat the Heat….Seein how his production has declined every year not to mention he has been anemic in the playoffs averaging 4.2ppg 5.6rpg 1apg…im pretty sure with those numbers he better hope he gets off the bench…not to motion he is about as slow as Christmas…Much rather have Scalibrine(I know i mispelled his name)

4. Vince….-I love Vince being a UNC fan but his time has came and went….He was and is a good player buut no where near where he used to be….The reason they brought him in was to serve as main scoring threat to relieve Rashad Lewis of that burden..That back fired the Magic IMOP was better with Turkolu…..

5. CP to Orlando–Possible, but in order for that to go through Vince/Rashad Lewis/Gortat/Jameer/ would have to leave because Magic are already over the CAP so the Magic would have to strip their roster to do so…Hornets have the upperhand in this ordeal….

6. Miami & ATL&Bucs- ReALLY you are gonna tell me with a straight face that Miami will have a tough time getting through one or both of the these teams…I live in the ATL and let me tell you the Hawks look darn good agains the scrub teams or teams that have one guy…..But as soon as the 2nd round comes about they dont show up/forget how to play the game of basketball.

6.) Im still trying to figure this out…..are you a Bulls/LA/Celts fan or are you just a hater of Miami…..

7. Talking about orlando is the team to beat….um really because im pretty sure they nutted on themselves when they played the Celtics this year in the post season so im pretty sure boston has their number……The magic are a great regular season team but are unproven in the playoffs…

[Reply]

monmon Reply:

@ UNCB.

1. Bosh couldn’t beat anybody either one-on-one or as a team player. He never led Toronto to greater heights. He loses almost all first round playoffs for his team. He had a slight nudge on his face and cracked it. Nobody is scared of Bosh at forward. And please don’t compare him to Bynum, Andrew was injured yet played every game in the playoffs and helped LA win the crown. And he blocks shots and rebounds all the time. He’s a good team player.

2. And please, Wade can’t guard shit. Did you see how Rondo ran rings around him? Did you see him slow down Allen at all? He’s an overrated defensive player, that’s all. He’s a great offensive player, yes, but defensively any 1 or 2 guard will score against the injury prone Wade.

3. I agree that JO has slowed down during the years because of his injuries. And of course he will be a sub once Perkins gets back. But he is still effective defensively either in single coverage situations or as a help defender. He blocks and slows down everybody in the middle. I can see LBJ hesitating to attack the rim with him fronting the middle.

4. Vince was that bad last year but he’s proud and I’m sure he will bounce back. And if CP3 does transfer, Jameer will be traded but the Magic gets better. And who in Miami can stop Dwight? Softy Bosh?

5. I don’t see Miami beating either Boston or Orlando. Agreed that Boston is better than Orlando now, but if CP3 is with them it’s gonna be a different story. I can see Dwight with him blossom into a Shaq type of player. And with Vince, Rashard, and the rest of the group maturing it’s gonna be hard to beat them.

So quit trying to use stats alone to determine a player’s value. LBJ is MVP but did he do shit? The real MVP should be one who brings his team to great heights while doing well personally and eventually to a title. What g00d is it to have 2 MVPs and ZERO rings…

I personally am a Celtics fan and you shouldn’t be crowning yourselves eastern champs just yet. Your team has a few key weaknesses, emphasis on few. When it comes to the magic who contains dwight howard? if you face the celtics who contains rondo? and if they do get shaq which is pretty likely it creates a HUGE problem on the defensive end.

The reason Lebron lost to the magic was because they couldn’t contain dwight. The reason they lost to the celtics was because they couldn’t contain rondo OR garnett. Now you do have chris bosh to defend but the record shows that chris doesn’t do to hot against the big ticket. The other top teams in the east are VERY good at defending without using double teams which means that your superstars are going to have their hands full trying to score.

[Reply]

shawn Reply:

and i see you forget what wade did to boston?

monmon Reply:

Bitter excuses from bitter LOSERS, as usual!

shawn Reply:

so who is going to guard wade or lbj on the magic?
matt barnes is gone wait i know vince carter or maybe lewis

[Reply]

James Reply:

First of all, Shaq doesn’t create huge problems. He really doesn’t. There’s nothing much to argue here, just….no. If you watched a Cavs game (or 50) last year, you’d have seen him completely unable to operate against any defender in the post. All of his hook shots were horrendously flat, and he somehow lost all touch. A single, large body is all it takes to shut the big guy down these days.
I agree that Rondo could be an issue. He’s quick as hell and creative with the ball in his hands. But in that Cleveland series, when LeBron guarded Rondo straight up, Rondo couldn’t do much. Unfortunately, Mike Brown didn’t use LeBron to stick Rondo very often. This was presumably because they needed to save his legs, so he could carry the Cavs on the offensive end. With the Heat, that problem disappears. He can expend energy in shutting down the other team’s top player, and Wade and Bosh can handle more of the scoring load.
And as for containing Dwight? The Cavs lost to the Magic in 2009 because they doubled Dwight, then got murdered on three pointers raining down all night. You’d think that doubling Dwight would be necessary, but it’s not. He doesn’t have a low-post go-to move, at all, and the guy shoots 50% from the line. Guard him one on one, keep a body between him and the basket, and he’s gonna have a tough time converting 10-foot turnarounds. And if he does get in too deep before catching the ball, just foul the heck out of him and play the odds with his free throw shooting. Meanwhile, STICK to the shooters. I’ll never understand why Cleveland didn’t at least try this strategy in 2009. So in the end, my solution for Dwight is to use every one of the 24 fouls that Z, Juwan, Udonis, and Joel Anthony have to give.

And beyond all this “here’s what the Heat can do” stuff…Isn’t it a much larger issue for the Magic and Boston that they’re going to have to cover LeBron and Wade? Who’s getting that done? Vince Carter and Rashard Lewis? Ray Allen and Paul Pierce? THOSE are match-up nightmares, and I’m not even mentioning Chris Bosh right now. Throw him in the mix, and that’s bad, bad news for any team in the NBA. No one can guard this team straight-up.

So while there might be a concern here or there as to how to defend one star on Boston or Orlando, it’s NOTHING compared to the colossal problems that Three Kings pose.

[Reply]

shawn Reply:

no team right now can afford to double team wade or Lebron
but i think Boston will be a bigger challenge to Miami then the lakers

[Reply]

Rob Reply:

Do you really expect Zydrunas ilgauskus or juwan howard to guard dwight howard? There’s no way. The reason we beat them is because we have good individual defenders. The reason JO was garbage was because he had kendrick perkins on him. Your team has no interior defense you’ll get torn apart by teams with good offensive front lines such as the lakers, magic and celtics. You may get more highlight plays but you won’t end up with a title at the end of this season.

James Reply:

No, I said I expect the frontcourt players to stay between Dwight and the basket, and when he’s in too deep, foul the hell out of him. Make him earn it, that’s all you have to do.
And like I said, the Heat pose more problems than the Magic or Celtics do. You can talk about guarding this person or that, but 3 of the top 7 (by any standard) offensive players in basketball play for the same team. THAT is a much bigger problem than one guy who has a match-up advantage over Joel Anthony or Zydrunas.
And by the way, LeBron slapped up about a 38-8-8 against the Magic in ’09. He truly had no help, so the Cavs lost. D-Wade played a great series against the Celts this spring, but he had no help, so the Heat lost. I think those guys are going to have help the next time they face the Magic and Celtics.

James Reply:

And come on man, the reason JO was garbage was because Perkins was guarding him? Really? What about the 300 games of basketball he played before the Celtics series, in which he was also garbage? Jermaine O’Neal hasn’t been a valuable low-post NBA player in a long time.

32 monmon { 07.25.10 at 1:43 am }

“they will be good. to deny them that is naive. and there is a lot of effort here to differentiate between what Boston did with the Big Three and what Miami did. Yes, Miami and particularly Lebron created a lot of unnecessary hubub (which i deplore) but if you push all that aside, there is NOT much difference. BOTH were teams made overnight. period. ”

Matthew Bunch Reply:

That’s a really clear-headed person looking at the situation. The only difference is that the Heat’s players were smart enough to chase championships in their prime instead of when they got old, buddy-buddy players did it instead of buddy-buddy GM’s (McHale, Ainge), and there was a one-hour show for LeBron. THAT’S IT. Yet the Celtics are heralded as role models and what “team” is all about, and the Heat are hated. I don’t mind being the hated team (it’s a little fun, to be sure), but it’s so nonsensical that I wish I could talk people out of it.

[Reply]

Big3 of Southbeach Fan Reply:

you have very good points. i personally don’t see anything wrong with players agreeing to play. i think “conspiracy” is the only excuse that other teams and non-heat fans can say because they want to have something to destroy the morale of the team and the heat fans once the championship is won.

i also don’t mind being the hated team. but as written by an nba writer at nba.com, “nobody roots for Goliath”. and miami can now be considered the Goliath of NBA. that is the reason why a lot of teams are hating us and we can’t avoid it.

i think that nincompoop laker/bulls/orlando fan that we are talking about should visit his own site – forumblueandgold to see how some lakerfans are thinking way beyond his empty head. here is an excerpt of the long concern expressed by Zach, a lakerfan at fb&g:

“This Lakers team can be “easily” countermatched by a roster of tough on-ball defenders. Miami is close, and that worries me. LeBron is the best defensive 3 when he tries. Wade is the best defensive 1 in the game (he’ll be matched at the 1 with their clutch lineup – Wade/Miller/James/Bosh/Haslem), and Bosh is an underrated defender.”

the statements above from a lakerfan clearly negates the previous statements of moron/monmon that dwade can’t play D. i’m now slapping these comments at his face. so he is pouring out all his nonsense arguments here because he’ll just be a laughing stock at the fb&g site. that’s the style of a coward and an idiot. bye bye forever moron/monmon. whatever kind of insult you raise from now on to this team, its fans, and this site will just return to you like a slap on your face and idiot brain. hahahaha.

shawn Reply:

i agree, i know miami is going to be the most hated team in the nba and the haters going to make up all these excuses why
like that guy rob saying who is going to guard Dwight Howard well whos going to guard wade and lbj
before you can run a double team on them now if you do they have each other to pass to or Mike miller waiting at the 3 point line
and Bosh with his outside shooting his ability to get to the basket
well when the heat play the magic
they have to worry about one player and there 3 point shooting (you gotta give credit where credit is due) but the magic have 2 worry about 3 players
before teams will design their defences to stop wade lbj or bosh (remember wade is the best in the NBA at creating his own shot and getting to the foul line)
this is something they haven’t seen before ever
the heat were ranked 2nd in D last year im not worried about there D
remember in 2008 everyone taught the Celtics Defense was bad not they proved everyone wrong
and as basketball fans we are all going to be “WITNESS” to some great games

other teams will indeed have a hard time figuring out how to defend the whole miami heat team. we have a lot of offensive options. double teaming any one of them will be a big mistake, other teams will pay the prize. late help defense could result to more fouls and bring other teams to penalty early in each quarter. we don’t have a problem with that because we have good FT shooters.
it would also be interesting to see how we can convert easy transition baskets with the superstars around.

@Sean and big 3, it’s going to b so entertaining seeing us on the fast break and lil ammo against people who say Jordan, Larry, magic or barkley wouldn’t team up. Magic and Larry absolutly hated each other, and why would magic want to go anywhere he was playing in LA with Kareem, not some backwater town. Magic also couldn’t go anywhere as he signed a 25yr/25mill deal. Jordan also had pippen who is a top 50 NBA all time player and Jordan also signed a long contract of 8 years. And as for Charles! What a hypocrite, lebron left after 7 years, Charles left after 8.

Lebron and bosh both left teams who, after 7 years still hadn’t been able to put another all star player around their number 1. Kobe was also just as desperate to leave, and alot more public and arrogant about it until they were giftwrapped gasol. And hey lebron may have left and hurt Cleveland, atleast he didn’t cheat on his wife by raping another woman.

And they were certainly raped by the Celtics months ago. Assuming of course that everybody’s healthy, the same thing will happen next season. You just got 3 hogs but very few reliable players especially on the defensive end. And please don’t tell me that LBJ, Bosh and Slow Z can guard the front court. Boozer and Noah will control them, Pau and Andrew will negate them, and most certainly KG, Perk (or JO), and Paul will whoop their asses come playoff time. Forget the regular season, that doesn’t count in the endgame. So be annoyed and keep on looking at regular season stats, you know very well nobody remembers them in hindsight.

That series should not be used as an indicator of the Heat as a whole. The team got the worst performance from a big man I’ve ever seen and still should have been going back to Boston (everyone forgets the Pierce shot was an absolutely perfectly guarded prayer).

The Heat of the past have had many deficiencies, but I wouldn’t say defense is one of them. It’s a Riley-styled team, and the big names get their points, but from a schematic standpoint, I’d say they’re above-par. And with two guys who have made the All-Defensive team over the last two years, I’d say they’re going to be just fine on the defensive end.

Throw out Boston please. They were old and lucky last year, and they just got a year older. The Lakers obviously match up with this team, but unless Orlando trades for Chris Paul, there’s no other team that can go man-for-man against this team. I know you don’t like them, but boil off that dislike and just look at it. They have two of the best three/four and three of the best 10. They’re going to be okay against Joakim Noah.

[Reply]

Big3 of Southbeach Fan Reply:

exactly, Matthew. Boston, my former team, were done and they really just got lucky. Boston fans, like me then, never knew we were getting to the finals. We were really shocked. As the first seed, I was expecting cleveland to win in the ECF and looking forward to see how lebron and kobe will battle it out in the finals. It never happened, but in 2011, it will. Orlando is a threat but not that strong because i saw how they played against lakers and boston. Orlando have this tendency of folding up during critical games, Howard has poor FT shooting, even Carter missed FTs which could have won the game for them. Orlando is not a good match against the lakers in the finals, they are underdogs. But if you see the heat vs lakers, that’s a very good match because both teams have players with championship caliber.

monmon Reply:

The problem with your theory is you assume they’ll have the same numbers when they’re together. They each got those numbers being the go-to guy in their teams. Now that they’re together they’ll fight to get the ball, especially during end-games. Even if we grant that they won’t fight for the ball, experience tells us that these players will never be the same again, offensive wise. So they have to improve on their defense to get a real shot at the title. I don’t see them getting better on defense at all. At best, they’ll just be decent defenders.

So you really think Boston is shot, huh? Ok let’s see what you got. Assuming Arroyo and Slow Z are starters, what do you have in your bench: Old Juwan (immobile); UD (decent player both ways); Chalmers, Anthony and Pittman ( all unproven); Miller (soft 6th man who can shoot the 3 occasionally but only if OPEN); and who else? Cmon, man, even you would know they’re no good. At least if you wanna win the title. Only 3 of them will probably get to play, the rest shall be water boys.

Look at your competition in the East: Bucks (potential is tremendous) are young guns; Atlanta (maturing athletes); Orlando has the beast in Dwight and are now experienced enough to slap your guys; Chicago has its own version of the big 3 in Rose, Boozer and Noah. Plus it has a great bench. Bulls could be the biggest challenge with their young athletes but Im going with Boston, Orl, Chi before Miami.

Your delusions shall just have to wait.

i don’t need other teams’ sites just to be loved and be popular. in the first place, i don’t have to be popular. with all due respect to other bloggers, i have my own place in society that’s much above par than the guy at the morgue.
i just come here from time to time because i enjoy basketball.
i don’t have to insult other teams because i’m confident with my team. insulting is a defense mechanism to cope with probably, a failure in life.
and i also believe in bad karma, even if we don’t know our real names here, whatever bad we do and say, whatever motives or hidden agenda we have, it will be known to our Creator. and definitely, there is always payback time.
bottomline, i wish i could read more posts discussing about the team rather than seeing just insults from a very uneducated troller. being a former celtic fan, i never saw a troller as uneducated, disrespectful, and nonsensical as this one. the post exchanges have been very healthy and educational. even trollers from other teams have respect for the site and the bloggers.

Monmon, the thread ran out so I’m continuing down here.

LeBron is a Magic, not a Michael. He’ll flourish with the guys around him, providing better than Wade or Bosh has ever had before. And Bosh doesn’t require the ball in his hand like a Wade or LeBron, he’s your inside guy. Mike Miller had one of the top-25 three-point shooting performances of all time last season on a crappy team. You don’t think the three will space the floor for him better than in Washington?

Those players on average teams aren’t very good. But surrounded with top-tier talent, Chalmers could be a top-10 point guard in the league. I firmly believe that. The centers literally just need to camp near the basket and collect rebounds and get a couple of blocks now and again. Their offensive output is really unnecessary. I’ll play with a rotation of eight: Wade, James, Bosh, Arroyo, Z, Chalmers, Miller, Haslem. Sprinkle the rest in every now and again and you’re good to go.

Please remove every competing team from your list except Orlando. Bucks are a fine team, but not in the Heat’s class. Miami has had a handle on Atlanta the last two years, and that was with junk. Chicago has a worse record than the Heat last year and added a player significantly worse than any of the three Miami added. Joakim Noah is not a top-30 player in the league, people just like him for some reason. Dwight is intimidating, but he’s one guy, and I’ll take him having some uncontested shots inside while the Heat spread the floor and work around him.

I don’t think I’m the one with delusions, my friend.

monmon Reply:

Of course that’s your opinion and you’re entitled to it. But you just said it yourself, there are only 3 legitimate bench players in your lineup. That means the 3 hogs shall play most of the time. That will diminish their stamina come playoff time. And they can’t do that effectively for the next 5 yrs, which they have to deal with as Miami can’t get good role players while the 3 hogs are there. Nobody will play for pennies anymore after this Heat fiasco. So you’re stuck with them for a while. Now, you assume that Lebron will be a Magic, and DWade will score, and Bosh will rebound. Problem is, even if true, they have to this night in and night out. And Bosh is soft, man. He can’t deal with KG, Pau or Boozer or Noah or Dwight. Nobody’s scared of your frontline. Lebron can easily be neutralized with a team having a big frontline like what the Celts did to the Cavs the past years.

Maybe you forgot about Orlando during the time of young Shaq when the starting five were considered the best in the NBA. But they didn’t have any bench so they got schooled by Houston in the finals. The same is the situation in Miami now. Everything is about the 3 hogs, and the rest are just there to support them. Team play does not work that way. Each player has to be good at what he does. Chalmers a great prospect? Cmon. Arroyo? No good point guards already, and that’s the guy who brings the ball up. You wanna use the others to bring the ball up? Lebron failed to succeed doing that with the Cavs. Then there’s your center problem. Matchup wise they suck. Can Z still rebound? Can Anthony? Good luck with Bosh against the young forwards. One slap on his face and he gets injured.

I understand your elation of the hogs’ homecoming, but I think it’s but a dream to believe they’ll win 6 rings much less 1. For the next 6 years, it’ll be a combination of LA, Boston, Chicago, Oklahoma, Orlando and maybe even Portland (when all are healthy) conferences and finals series games, with LA taking most of the titles. But ok, you may include Miami in one series, friend.

[Reply]

Matthew Bunch Reply:

Here’s my take on your perspective. You have healthy skepticism about something which is entirely unproven. I understand that. But you really think this team is going to struggle against Boston for the next six years? Miami is Boston, except younger and better. Rondo’s better than Chalmers, obviously, but I’ll take Miami everywhere else, and I think Rondo’s going to take a hit when the original Big 3 crumble.

LeBron failed to do that in Cleveland because he had junk players around him, no one who could finish. Dwyane Wade won’t have that problem. Chris Bosh won’t have that problem. Mike Miller won’t have that problem.

And here’s my biggest issue with your take. You’re willing to eliminate the untested experiment in Miami, yet prop up proven average teams like Chicago and Portland! The Bulls were positively average this year, and they traded Hinrich for Boozer, basically. Slight upgrade, but it’s a drop in a bucket compared to the upgrade the Heat had.

I’m not someone who’s booking spots for eight Larry O’Brien Trophies in AmericanAirlines Arena. I know injuries can occur, bad luck can hit you, a number of different things can derail championship hopes. Plus, I know the Lakers aren’t chopped liver (however, Kobe is an old 31 and getting older every game). But you really wouldn’t bet the over on 1.5 championships over the next six years for the Heat?

Surya Fernandez Reply:

Just ignore him like I have done and others here are doing now. It doesn’t matter how logical or well-reasoned your arguments are, he just wants attention. Hopefully he’ll just go away if we all just resist the urge to respond to his rants.

54 monmon { 07.27.10 at 4:28 am }

I understand where you’re coming from with your take. And i did not say Miami will struggle against Boston for 6 years. I’m saying that Boston will beat Miami the next 2 yrs. despite their seemingly geriatric lineup. I never underestimate the heart of the champions. For the next 6 yrs however, Miami has to deal with Orlando and Chicago, and who knows what Boston will do to augment their lineup once Ray and KG are gone. And we now know what Rondo can do. What I know is Chicago has a new great defensive coach and very young and very athletic players that are maturing fast. Dwight in Orl will get even better and with the prospect of CP3 joining either this year or next, they’ll be the team to beat the next 6 yrs. Even without CP3, Orlando has the young and now experienced players to deal with any trouble Miami has to offer.

I have a hard time believing that Lebron can work great with the other 2 offensive minded players. I don’t see DWade and Bosh simply assisting and rebounding. I don’t see chemistry anywhere. Wade and Lebron together could not even vie for a gold medal for the US either in the 06 Worlds and 04 Olympics until Kobe and the others came in 08. They couldn’t beat Greece! at the Worlds and were whipped by Argentina during the Olympics despite having the best teammates they ever had in their careers. With the 3 of them together, they’ll just be a little above average players because their stats would diminish. They can’t possibly have the same stats when they need to share the ball more unlike when they had it all the time.

Then they have to deal with whoever wins the West. The Lakers are a gimme for title shots at least until Kobe retires. The lakers have all the tools, experience and savvy to beat any team in the playoffs. The possible contenders to their throne are either Oklahoma (in a couple years) and Portland. Both have the best young athletic players today. But before Miami counts its titles, it has to deal with the tremendous competition in the East. I can only see them winning in maybe 1 year at the most.

I abhor what LBJ did to Cleveland. Nobody gets away with mocking a city, man, no matter how good or how much you liked the guy. As far as the NBA and even the world is concerned, LBJ copped out of greatness. That’s what the experts and the great players said, and I totally agree. He’ll just be another player that was once considered a candidate to be the greatest player ever — but blew it! He’ll always be remembered for what he did during the 2010 free agency fiasco…

[Reply]

Matthew Bunch Reply:

I think this is just an agree-to-disagree situation. You like where you stand, I like where I stand. We’ll find out soon enough.

The 04 and 06 teams aren’t a fair indicator. James was 19 and 21 years old, respectively, at the time. These aren’t kids anymore, they’re in their prime. If they don’t perform to max potential, it would be shocking and hugely disappointing.

As for the LeBron reaction, I don’t think he handled it great at all. If he even had an inkling he was leaving Cleveland, he should have never done a TV show. However, it’s unfair to criticize someone for serving out a contract to completion then moving on to another company. Everyone does that every day, and just because you might have some loyalty doesn’t mean you should tie yourself down against your own best interests. I wouldn’t have been angry if he decided ultimately to go back to Cleveland, but he chose his friendships and winning over that. Be upset at the way he decided, but not at the decision itself.

And don’t listen to the old guys. They’re either angry they didn’t win a ring (Barkley), didn’t have the chance to do it themselves (Jordan), or actually did exactly this and forgets about it (Johnson). Listen to Rick Barry on Le Batard’s show. He’s from the “old old school,” using his term, and thought it was fantastic. You can have your own opinions, but this “copping out of greatness” stuff is bunk.
