Miami Heat target Derek Fisher is expected to sign with the Oklahoma City Thunder after clearing waivers at 6 p.m. Wednesday, ESPN's Marc Stein reported today. Stein said that the Heat made a strong recruiting pitch to the five-time NBA champion, but the Thunder's financial flexibility and offer of a more defined role -- backup point guard Eric Maynor suffered a season-ending injury in January -- led him to choose Oklahoma City.
Mario Chalmers has improved his play from previous seasons, and would likely remain as the starter if Fisher signed with the Heat. Although Norris Cole has struggled of late, a 38 percent shooter whose defense has regressed in recent years would not have gotten playing time over a developing rookie.
