The Heat are expected to sign their 2010 second-round draft pick to a 10-day contract.

Yahoo! Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski reported today that the Miami Heat will likely sign free agent power forward Jarvis Varnado to a 10-day contract. The Boston Celtics waived Varnado Sunday, and the 2010 second-round Heat pick is expected to clear waivers this afternoon.

Since Miami drafted Varnado, the 6-foot-9 shot-blocker played overseas in Italy and Israel during the 2010-11 and 2011-12 NBA seasons. He participated in the Heat's 2012 summer league team and training camp, but unfortunately battled injuries during both instances. He was cut in training camp in favor of Terrel Harris and Josh Harrellson -- both of whom have been waived recently -- and joined the D-League's Sioux Falls Skyforce. Varnado averaged 14 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks in the NBDL. His play impressed the Celtics enough to sign him Dec. 24, but Varnado only played mop-up duty for Boston before getting waived.

A 10-day contract won't give Varnado much of an opportunity to showcase his talents, but it's encouraging that Miami has some interest in him. He appears to be a good fit for the Heat because he is an athletic, defensive-minded big man. I hope he stays on the team so the Heat can bring him along the pipeline and mold him into a rotation player. Beyond Chris Bosh, Miami only has a regressing Udonis Haslem and an offensively limited Joel Anthony at the power forward/center position.

Wojnarowski also said that Chris Andersen took a physical for the Heat on Monday and will participate in a workout today.
