Preview: Heat visit the "new" New Orleans Pelicans as preseason winds down

Derick E. Hingle-USA TODAY Sports

The Miami Heat hit the road once again in preseason action, this time against the revamped Pelicans.

In a preseason battle between championship contender and a rebuilding franchise, the Miami Heat will face the New Orleans Pelicans at 8:00pm on Wednesday night.

The Pelicans have raced out to a surprising NBA-best 6-0 start to the preseason, though it's too bad none of these games actually count. Second-year rising star Anthony Davis is making strides and they also have new acquisition All-Star point guard Jrue Holiday from the Philadelphia Sixers to round out an intriguing roster that may or may not be enough to make the playoffs.

LeBron James is expected back in the lineup after sitting out the home blowout against the San Antonio Spurs and it remains to be seen whether Dwyane Wade will seek to improve on his dynamic performance last game and join him in the starting lineup. Chris Bosh would seemingly be the next candidate to take a preseason game off as he has participated in all six games so far. Ray Allen has not played in a week and it looks like he will rejoin them on the floor tonight.

The Heat carry a 4-2 preseason record, going 1-2 on the road. Even with the waiving of Jarvis Varnado, Charlie Westbrook and Larry Drew II announced on Monday, the Heat must still trim the roster with two more cuts to make it to the final 15-man roster by Monday's 3:00pm deadline. Expect to see Eric Griffin and Justin Hamilton make their final stand in a bid to make the team, though Roger Mason Jr. and Michael Beasley are the heavy favorites to grab those last two spots.

Tonight's game will be televised by Sun Sports.
