HHH GameTime Preview: Miami Heat Vs. Dallas Mavericks

Mike Ehrmann

The HEAT close out their four-game homestand against their two-time NBA Finals foe, the Dallas Mavericks. Can Dirk, VC and the rest of the AARP crew show these kids a thing or two? Find out tonight at 7:30.

The Miami Heat will host the Dallas Mavericks tonight at the AAA, at 7:30 PM EDT for the first of two contests between them this season. The HEAT will go on to visit Dallas on February 18th, and is currently finishing up a four game homestand. After starting out with their third straight win, a 102-97 affair over the Los Angeles Clippers last Thursday, they dropped a 111-110 stunner to the Boston Celtics on Saturday. Miami destroyed the Milwaukee Bucks in their last game on Tuesday by a score of 118-95. Tomorrow, they'll face the Bobcats in Charlotte before returning to South Beach.

The Mavericks defeated the Washington Wizards in Dallas on Tuesday, 105-95 in a one-game homestand. Their current road trip is a short one, concluding tomorrow against the Magic in Orlando.

The Mavs and the HEAT last faced off on January 2nd last season. The visiting 13-19 Mavs were hoping to derail the 21-8 HEAT, and almost succeeded, playing Miami to a 103-103 draw after 48 minutes. Miami pulled away in the extra frame for a final of 119-109. LeBron James posted game highs with 32 points, 12 rebounds, nine assists and three steals. Dwyane Wade added 27 points with 10 boards, five rebounds, two blocks and two steals, and Chris Bosh scored 17 points with four rebounds and three blocks. Ray Allen came off the bench for 15 points and seven rebounds. The Mavs were led by 30 points from since-departed OJ Mayo. * Full Recap * Box Score

HEAT coach Erik Spoelstra spoke afterward about long distance shooting:

What I liked about it is we were missing so many wide open 3-pointers the first half and then through three quarters, but we still found the trust to hit Shane [Battier] for a couple big ones and Ray [Allen] for a big one as well.

On Tuesday, the HEAT made short work of the Milwaukee Bucks, 118-95. LeBron James led Miami on 13-of-21 shooting, including four-of-seven from deep for 33 points in 30 minutes. Michael Beasley came off the bench for his most extensive game action of the season, scoring 19 points on eight-of-12 shooting in as many minutes. Mario Chalmers scored 15 with a game high seven assists, and Dwayne Wade only put up eight points, but also led the team with eight boards, adding five assists, two blocks, and two steals. Gary Neal and John Henson each scored 18 off the bench to lead the Bucks. * Full Recap * Box Score

Coach Spoelstra talked later about rebounding from the tough loss to the Celtics on Sunday.

That's been a long 48 hours in this building but at least we were able to respond with a better game. I think our guys felt better looking each other in the eyes in the locker room tonight.

Nowitzki, who passed Jerry West into 16th on the NBA's all-time scoring list, reflected afterward:

Jerry [West] is the man, he is the logo and that says it all. It has been a great ride, this is my 16th season and
hopefully I can pass a couple of more guys and win a couple more games and hopefully help this franchise make
the playoffs.
