Wade is one of ten NBA players nominated for the 2013 Kia Community Assist Award this year and it was announced Thursday that James will donate $1 million to renovate the gym at his alma mater, St. Vincent-St. Mary High School in Akron, Ohio.
He recently purchased new Nike uniforms for all of The Fighting Irish's athletic teams and plans to be heavily involved in this new project as he told Ohio.com, "I'm a hands-on guy and this is going to be more hands-on because it's something that means a lot to me," James said. "I'll try to be hands on with Coach Dru, with the school, with the floor, the locker rooms, the bleachers. ... I have a good sense of what stadiums or arenas or schools or gyms should look like."
Plans for what will be named The LeBron James Arena began in January will include a new floor, lighting, bleachers, locker rooms, and an upgraded training room. There may also be an increase in seating capacity as well.
School officials are hopeful the project will be completed by late September.
Starring at the school from 1999-2003, James has been no stranger to his old stomping grounds. He routinely trains at the school during the offseason when spending time in his hometown of Akron in the summer.
St. Vincent-St. Mary has won six basketball state titles, with three of them being led by James in 2000, 2001 and 2003.
The school retired his jersey during his senior season.
