Talking Heat with 790 The Ticket's Jonathan Zaslow

For those of you who don't know, or don't live in the greater Miami area, Jonathan Zaslow is radio talk-show host on South Florida's #1 sports talk station, WAXY 790 ‘The Ticket'.  While he roots for all the local sports teams, ‘Zas' is a die-hard Miami Heat fan and has been since their inaugural season.  Every few weeks Zaslow takes the time to put a blog together for us at PIM, and here is his latest entry:

A couple of things I want to mention before getting to the Stoudemire trade stuff......

As far as Wade complaining about the "system" last week, it's pretty surprising that this is the first real complaining we've heard from Dwyane this season. That means one of two things: 1) He's real good at keeping the complaining in-house, which is obviously what you want. 2) He completely gets what the plan is with this team. He may not be happy about with the situation, but he realizes it's not worth going nuts about and help will eventually be on the way.

On another note, I can't believe I'm actually going to say this, but you can't trade Dorell Wright as a luxury tax casualty. It's just silly. I'm not one who complains about avoiding the tax, because I understand the business part of this. But this kid is finally starting to look like a decent rotation player. It's pretty typical that he'd wait 6 years, and be on the final year of this deal before he decides to look like he has a clue, but they should hold onto him for the remainder of the season.

Yahoo! has been reporting the Heat are in hot pursuit of Amare Stoudemire. It'd be stupid to trade Michael Beasley for Stoudemire, unless there are multiple big deals in the works. Anyone who thinks Dwyane Wade and Amare Stoudemire as your core is going to contend for a championship is eating moron sandwiches. Because that's how you have to measure this thing. 2010 is supposed to be about setting the Heat up with a championship core that will contend for several years. Wade and Stoudemire and a bunch of role players is just not good enough. You have to have that third guy. You can wait 30 some-odd games and get Stoudemire without giving up Beasley. It's just plumb dumb to make this move, unless something big follows that deal.

Now certainly that's a possibility, considering teams are dying to shed payroll and the Heat have $40 million worth of expiring contracts. You can add a couple of real nice players with that money.

All in all, you don't go from being mediocre to a contender by trading a good player for a good player. It's not possible, and that's what they'd be doing. Bottom line: it's reassuring to know that the guy who runs this team is still the only guy in town who is willing to make a bold move. When's the last time the Marlins/Panthers/Dolphins made a move worth talking about??? Took some type of gamble??? The Heat will make moves.........I just don't think it's coming by February 18th.

You can hear Zaslow every weeknight from 7-10pm (unless there is a Panthers or Marlins game) on 790 The Ticket.  If you have questions for Zaslow you can e-mail him at, or you can leave it in the comments section and I will get it answered for you.
