Preseason Game Preview: Heat host Spurs again at AA Arena with slightly less at stake

New, comment

In a "rematch" of the 2013 NBA Finals, the San Antonio Spurs must return to the scene of the crime to face the world champion Miami Heat.

It's been 17 weeks since the Miami Heat outlasted the San Antonio Spurs over the course of a physically and emotionally grueling 7-game series to determine the 2012-13 NBA Championship.

Tonight, there is no drama and pretty much nothing at stake though it will still be fun to see a rematch of these two great teams. Unfortunately, if Spurs coach Gregg Popovich sent some of his best players home early from a road trip and skip out on a regular season game last season at the AA Arena, don't expect to see much of his starters Saturday night.

The Heat would prefer to look forward in their once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to Three-Peat instead of reliving the past and facing a Finals opponent in the preseason. Besides, after their core players had their way with the Atlanta Hawks, Charlotte Bobcats and Detroit Pistons to race out to a 3-0 preseason record, the team has now come out flat twice in a row and hardly put up much of a fight against the Washington Wizards and the Brooklyn Nets.

It's anyone's guess as to whether Dwyane Wade will suit up for this game, but it's a strong possibility he will to shake off the rust. If that's the case, both teams could come out with their same starting five as they did during the Finals. An interesting matchup for sure but once the bench players pour in as they do in the preseason, the curiosity factor may wane.

The more intriguing question perhaps to ponder is if this is a rematch of the Finals or a preview of next year's Finals.
