UPDATE: Griffin, Hamilton released by Heat; final roster set at 15

New, comments

Eric Griffin and Justin Hamilton were hopeful of making the final roster of two-time defending NBA champion Miami Heat, but have been released just days shy of the regular season.

Reports are out that the Miami Heat have released the athletic and young Eric Griffin, removing him from potentially joining the team.

Griffin, 23, had been impressive with his athletic ability, highlighted by jumping over 6'10" Mason Plumlee earlier this preseason. Griffin went unselected out of Campbell University in 2012.n While many fans would have liked to see the team go younger and have a prospect like Griffin, the Heat seemingly have other plans.

Griffin was an exciting player to watch, but it seemed as though he didn't possess enough consistently to make a team like the Heat with championship aspirations. He will certainly receive a lot of interest through the D-League and overseas teams.

With Griffin released the Heat now have 16 players on the roster. They will make their decision in the coming days about releasing either Greg Oden, Michael Beasley, Roger Mason Jr., or Justin Hamilton. It seems very likely that Oden and Beasley make the team.

The Heat will have to release one more player before Tuesday's opener against the Bulls.

UPDATE: Ira Winderman of the Sun-Sentinel is reporting that Justin Hamilton has also been released by the team, with Beasley and Mason making it to the final 15-man roster. When official word from the Heat arrives, we will pass it along.
