Dwyane Wade bypasses player option, becomes free agent

New, comments

As we have expected, Dwyane Wade is not opting into his contract and will bypass the second year on his deal to become a free agent.

Dwyane Wade has chosen not to opt-in to his contract with the Miami Heat and will become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

Wade, was widely expected to not pick up his option, but few truly know what Wade's ultimate plans are here. Hours after Luol Deng chose to opt-in to his $10.1 million contract for next season, Wade opts out. Deng's opt-in makes it highly unlikely that the Heat can offer Wade a max deal for next season only while also trying to sign Goran Dragic to a contract.

That doesn't mean Wade is leaving, but it leaves some uncertainty about what is happening.

Dwyane Wade will be an unrestricted free agent on Wednesday, with teams having over a week to talk with free agents before contracts can be signed. The Heat will try to retain Wade as Pat Riley has made that clear.
