First it was Pat Riley taking a meeting with LaMarcus Aldridge before he decided to sign with the San Antonio Spurs. Then it was a late entrance for David West before he followed Aldridge to San Antonio. Now another big man has been connected to Miami and this time it's Amare Stoudemire.
Source: Amar'e Stoudemire is also strongly considering the Heat. Meeting with Pat Riley tomorrow. Heat has tax midlevel just FYI.— Jared Zwerling (@JaredZwerling) July 8, 2015
Stoudemire has a home in Miami and like many athletes, spends his off-season down here. Amare is just another name, along with the likes of Carlos Boozer of big men that can be bought at a bargain price. The reason for the interest in bigs would be because of Miami's continued attempt to trade the salary of Chris Andersen, who just turned 37 the other day.
Once Andersen and Mario Chalmers are traded, expect Miami to go after a shooter (Dorell Wright, or Marcus Thornton) to fill the shooting void. Also, depending on Willie Reed's play in the summer league, he might be brought in as another end of the bench big option.
The bottom line is Miami is looking to trade contracts while filling out the bench with cheap veterans or an infusion of youth from the summer league. If Stoudemire does indeed sign with Miami, I expect the arena to hide all fire extinguishers by the press conference.
