Playing without Dion Waiters, Justise Winslow and Josh Richardson, the Miami Heat needed some help on the perimeter. They found it. His name was Wayne Ellington. Ellington missed the first 16 games of the season with a quad injury before returning on Monday. On Wednesday, he made his presence felt.

Ellington had 22 points on 5-9 from downtown to help the Heat get a much needed win against the Denver Nuggets, 106-98.

Miami had a nice roller coaster game against the Nuggets as well. They went back and forth with Denver in the first half. Denver had the best point differential in 2nd quarters in the NBA, but it was a 24-17 advantage for the Heat that helped them get the lead.

In the third quarter, they held a lead early and then gave it all up and more to Denver. They were out-scored by 10. But the 4th quarter saw the Heat use an 18-2 run to take serious control of the game. Denver made it interesting late, but it was Ellington who’s shooting really put them apart.

Josh McRoberts started for the first time this season, as Derrick Williams didn’t even play. Tyler Johnson joined Ellington off the bench for 18 points: combining for 40 off the bench before adding in 10 from James Johnson.

As always, Hassan Whiteside anchored the Heat inside. He 25 points and 16 rebounds. Goran Dragic also had 16 points. The Heat did a really good job defensively in this game. But more than that, it was 106 offensive points that gave them the chance to win. You know what also helped? 14 steals for the Heat that created plenty of opportunities.

Denver had 17 points each from Danillo Gallinari, Jameer Nelson, Nusuf Jokic and Wilson Chandler. The Nuggets had two really bad quarters that hurt them.

The Heat improve to 6-12 on the season and will play the Utah Jazz on Thursday night.
