Dion Waiters has missed 19 consecutive games since a MRI revealed a torn muscle in his groin area. He hasn’t practiced or been on the road with the team since then.
But for the first time, Waiters is expected to go with the team on their season-long 6-game road trip that starts Tuesday in Phoenix. This could mark the return, sometime on this trip, for Waiters.
“If I’m on the road, man, I’m playing. I’m trying to play. That’s my whole main focus, just trying to get back out there.”
Waiters has played well for Miami in what the beginning of the season showed. With constant injuries in the backcourt and forward positions, the Heat have never had their full compliment of players.
In fact, they only had 9 available players on Sunday at home against Detroit.
Waiters will be welcomed back, but it is uncertain whether he would slide back into the starting rotation or not. Josh Richardson has started, but so has Rodney McGruder and Wayne Ellington. Spoelstra has yet to have all of them available to make a decision.
The Heat, 10-25, are near the bottom of the Eastern Conference and NBA. We will know if Waiters left with the team today, but won’t know of his game status until game day each time.
