For Heat center A.J. Hammons, the flu came at the worst possible time.

Hammons, the 7-footer Miami took back in the Josh McRoberts trade, will miss about a week because of the illness.

Pat Riley spoke of Hammons as an intriguing big man who could stretch the floor in the summer. He was reportedly a front-runner for one of the Heat’s last roster spots. But Hammons’ flu prevents him from proving to Erik Spoelstra and the rest of Miami’s coaching staff that he deserves to make the team.

Still, the flu isn’t a deal-breaker for Hammons. Spoelstra has said no one will get cut from training camp — players will either make the final roster or play for the Heat’s developmental league affiliate, the Sioux Falls Skyforce.
