Not many active professional athletes find themselves honored on their countries’ postage stamps. Miami Heat’s Goran Dragic has that rare distinction with a new Slovenian postage stamp saluting its basketball team winning the Eurocup 2017 championship.
When Dragic got the news, per Manny Navarro he was taken aback.
“I was surprised of course,” Dragic said after the morning shootaround at the FedEx Forum. “I was surprised, but happy at the same time. It means a lot just to see the whole team on that little stamp. It’s great.”
Asked if he was getting one, he replied,
“For sure, I’m going to buy one and put it in a little paper and have it for memories,” Dragic said. “But it’s awesome, it’s awesome to see that, that the people back home, they appreciate what you did for the country and it’s great.”
Congratulations to Goran for helping to bring the cup to Slovenia and being named the tournament's MVP. His teammate Luka Doncic, of Real Madrid, has climbed up the Sports Illustrated’s draft board to a projected number 2 pick for next year’s NBA lottery.
Dragic first stated he would retire from international competition, but later waffled a bit about the decision. Regardless, the summer of 2017 was a magical time for him, his family, and his country. Hopefully he can rinse and repeat the process for the Heat.
