OFFICIAL: Derrick Jones Jr. has re-joined the Miami HEAT as part of his two-way contract.
The team’s press release states, “Jones Jr. will join Miami tonight and is expected to be active for their game vs. the Los Angeles Lakers.”
Wayne Ellington and Tyler Johnson are out, but Kelly Olynyk, James Johnson, Justise Winslow, Luke Babbitt, Jordan Mickey are available as forwards, if Josh Richardson and Rodney McGruder slide to the shooting guard position.
In a 9-man rotation Bam Adebayo, Babbitt, Dragic, J. Johnson, McGruder, Mickey, Olynyk, Richardson, Wade, Whiteside, Winslow give eleven players, while Jones Jr. makes it 12 active ones.
In his 8 games with the Sioux Falls Skyforce Jones Jr. averaged 19.5 points and 7.9 rebounds per game, and converted an impressive 39.5% of his 3-point attempts.
Defensively DJJ was the Skyforce’s top defensive rebounder with a DREB% of 23.6%, lead the team with a Player Impact Estimate of 16.1, and had best DefRtg, 103.9, among the players under 25 years of age.
Having Jones Jr. active against the lottery-bound Lakers remains a mystery, especially when he has only 6 days, including Thursday, remaining on his two-contract before the Heat have to create a roster space for him to be eligible for the playoffs.
