James Shaw Jr. saved lives when he tackled a shooter and grabbed his assault rifle at a Waffle House in suburban Nashville April 22. Shaw, who has refused to take on the label of “hero,” appeared on the Ellen DeGeneres Show May 2.
Little did the 29-year-old basketball fan know that his favorite basketball player would greet him on the show.
It’s not every day that you get to meet a hero. Yesterday was that day for me. Thank you, @TheEllenShow for making it happen. https://t.co/dS7eV0SbYZ

“I know you don’t want to be called a hero, but I look at you as an American hero,” Dwyane Wade told Shaw. “When I sit down with my kids and I sit down and talk to them about role models and who I want them to look up to, I tell them to go look up James Shaw Jr.”
Gabrielle Union, Wade’s wife, tweeted her appreciation of the moment.
