Shane Battier had been in the running for a front office position with the Detroit Pistons, after Stan Van Gundy left the team. Battier was approached by the Pistons prior to their hiring of Ed Stefanski from the Grizzlies to run their front office. According to Ira Winderman of the Sun Sentinel, if chosen for the job, Battier would have served directly under Stefanski.
NBA source confirms that Shane Battier will remain with the Heat, will not move forward with the Pistons, who are filling out their front office.— Ira Winderman (@IraHeatBeat) May 29, 2018
Not counting his playing career and championship seasons, Battier has been with the Heat as director of basketball development and analytics since February 16th 2017.
It’s normal in the Heat organization to let staff interview for promotions in other organizations (most recently Juwan Howard) so this wasn’t surprising. Still, it’s great to see Battier remaining with Miami. Hopefully he can continue to rise within the ranks and stay with the Heat organization in the future.
