As we navigate this NBA hiatus, we’d thought we sit around the table and talk about our favorite moments so far from the Miami Heat this season. In this article, we are looking at the intangibles...not necessarily those moments on the court, but just in general the moments that have made this season special.
So let’s talk about it.
What’s your favorite moment so far for the Miami Heat this season?
MATT PINEDA: @pinedaHEAT — DWYANE WADE WEEKEND
My favorite moment so far has been Wade weekend. As the Heat celebrated the jersey retirement of their legend, Dwyane Wade, they added an entire weekend of events for such an important person. From the private screening of his documentary, to the actual jersey retirement, it was a fitting way to honor the person who has developed a winning culture in Miami.
For me personally, I was blown away at Wade’s retirement speech at the ceremony. It was the perfect description of him because he spent the time thanking everyone who helped him be who he is. And it was very intentional. Dwyane Wade has been my favorite player since he put on a Heat jersey for the first time, and it was my favorite moment to see his jersey go in the rafters where it belongs.
Surya Fernandez @SuryaHeatNBA - HEAT SPOIL BUCKS’ HOME OPENER
The Dwyane Wade jersey retirement ceremony and weekend celebration of his incredible career was a highlight for sure, but it was a little bittersweet so it can’t be my favorite moment in the midst of a surprising season that has shown some real progress along with some truly head scratching moments.
I was reminded of this game because these two teams would have played Monday night had the season not been suspended, and I still marvel how the Heat managed to spoil the home opener for the Milwaukee Bucks in their second game of the season. Jimmy Butler was still not ready to make his regular season debut with his new team after the birth of his child and Miami was down by 21 points on the road before forcing overtime against the top team in the NBA.
MVP candidate Giannis Antetokounmpo finished just short of a triple-double with 29 points, 17 rebounds and nine assists but fouled out with eight turnovers and went 0-5 from 3-point land in a wild game. Heat rookies Kendrick Nunn and Tyler Herro actually started this game together in the backcourt and combined for 32 points while veteran Goran Dragic led the Heat with 25 points off the bench.
Milwaukee has lost only two games at home since then and has the best home record in the NBA at 28-3 as well as the best overall record at 53-12. Miami would become the first team to beat the Bucks for the second time this season earlier this month, which already seems like a long time ago, and could have gone for the season sweep Monday.
BRANDON DI PERNO @brandon_diperno - HEAT VS RAPTORS OVERTIME DOMINATION:
Besides the Wade jersey retirement which I thought was handled extremely well, I think Miami’s first overtime win against the defending champion Toronto Raptors was my favorite moment of the season.
After an incredibly close game, Jimmy Butler forced overtime and dominated. It really provided a look at what was to come for the Heat (they thoroughly dominated 2019) and what Jimmy Butler was capable of as Miami’s chief superstar. Rather than me telling you about, watch it again here.
